Lawrence drops extra-inning heartbreaker to Hornets

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Lawrence University softball team dropped an 8-5 nonconference decision to Kalamazoo College in nine innings Monday at Legends Way.
Both teams scored four runs in the sixth inning to break a scoreless tie, and Kalamazoo scored four times in the ninth to take the lead for good.
Lawrence was limited to four hits in the game with Taylor Hughes picking up a double and driving in two runs.
Georgia Sedlack made the start and went six innings. She allowed one earned run on five hits, struck out two and walked three. Avery Chilson worked the final three innings, allowed three earned runs on five hits, and took the loss.
After Kalamazoo (6-4) broke through for a 4-0 lead in the top of the sixth, the Vikings rallied to tie it. Zoe Doherty and Mattigan Haller walked to start the bottom of the sixth for the Vikings. Hughes then doubled to score both runners and trim the lead to 4-2.
Jordan Wallin-Swanson followed with a single to score Hughes to cut the lead to one. After Sedlack, who had come in as a pinch-runner, moved to third on a wild pitch and a groundout, Kourtney Mercer's sacrifice fly scored her to tie the game at 4-4.
The game went to extra innings and neither team scored in the eighth.
Kalamazoo got a two-run triple and run-scoring double in the ninth on its way to grabbing an 8-4 lead.
Lawrence loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth but was limited to one run on Gillian Guerriero's sacrifice fly.
