APPLETON, Wis. --
CJ Filipek homered and drove in four runs Sunday to lead the Lawrence University baseball team to a 5-3 Midwest Conference win over Grinnell College at Whiting Field.
The win gave Lawrence a series win over the Pioneers after the teams split a doubleheader on Saturday.
Filipek went 3-for-4 with a homer, two doubles, four runs batted in and two runs scored.
Lawrence (11-12, 5-4 MWC) jumped on the Pioneers for three runs in the opening inning.
Tate Hartlaub started the game with a single, and
Zach Leslie followed with a single. After an out, Filipek doubled to score both runners for a 2-0 lead.
Shane Santaga later delivered a triple to score Filipek, and the Vikings led 3-0.
Grinnell (16-12, 4-5) chipped away and scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth to tie the game.
Taylor Freeman then started a rally for the Vikings in the seventh with an infield single. Filipek then belted a two-run homer, and the Vikings led 5-3.
Reliever
William Polanco worked around a pair of Grinnell singles in the eighth with two big strikeouts to retain Lawrence's lead.
Shane Foley came on in the ninth and worked around an infield single to record his fourth save of the season.
Rookie pitcher
Malachi Ross tossed two innings of scoreless relief to get the victory and improve to 2-0 on the season.
