APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's tennis team knocked off their oldest rival Wednesday 5-2 at the Lawrence Courts on the strength of the singles lineup.
    Lawrence won five of the six singles matches to grab the victory over Ripon. 
    The Red Hawks started strong by winning two of the three doubles matches to take the doubles point. Lawrence's Gabriel Garcia and Will Phillips were 6-1 winners at No. 3.
    Lawrence then rolled through the singles competition, led by No. 1 player Andrew Larson. On Larson's Senior Day, he topped Caleb Sippel 6-1, 6-2. Benjamin Hoppe grabbed a 6-1, 6-3 win for the Vikings at No. 2 singles, and Phillips was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 6.
    Owen Horton clinched the match victory for the Vikings in dramatic fashion at No. 4. After winning the opening set 6-0, Horton found himself trailing Ty Rondestvedt 5-0 in the second set. Horton roared back to win the next seven games to take the second set 7-5 and clinch the win for Lawrence.    
    Garcia finished the victory with a 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 win at No. 3.
    In a series that goes all the way back to 1924, Lawrence (8-13, 2-2 MWC) now has a 47-31-1 edge over the Red Hawks. Lawrence has won two straight and 13 of the last 15 against Ripon (6-13, 1-3).
