BELOIT, Wis. -- The Lawrence University baseball team got some home cooking on the road Saturday.
Forced to move Saturday's Midwest Conference doubleheader to Beloit College after Mother Nature snowed all over Appleton earlier in the week, the Vikings felt very much at home at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium.
Lawrence used strong pitching and some timely hitting to sweep a pair of games from the Bucs. Lawrence won the opener 8-2 and took the nightcap 2-0.
In the first game, Lawrence posted a six-run second inning to take control early. The big blow in the inning was
Taylor Freeman's three-run homer.
Nic Heerde collected a run-scoring double in the frame, and
Sage Beebe-Jenny and
Edan Perez both had RBI singles.
The Vikings tacked on insurance runs in the seventh on
Zach Leslie's RBI single and in the eighth when
CJ Filipek doubled and came around to score.
 Â
Richie LaCien picked up his first win of the season by putting together a solid 6.2 innings for the Vikings (9-10, 3-2 MWC). LaCien allowed just four hits while striking out two and walking three.
Nathan Zumbrunnen worked the final 2.1 innings and allowed just one hit with four strikeouts and a pair of walks.
 Â
Elden Santana posted another gem on the mound in the nightcap. The senior right-hander didn't allow a run over seven innings as he scattered three hits. Santana struck out six and walked two and improved to 4-0 on the season.
 Â
Nathaniel Johannes didn't allow a hit over the final two innings while striking out four and walking none to grab his first save of the season.
Lawrence scratched out a run in the second to take an early lead.
Shane Santaga singled to start the inning and stole second. After a pair of outs,
William Zatkowski reached on an error, and that allowed Santaga to score for a 1-0 lead.
The Vikings added a big insurance run in the seventh, and Zatkowski started the rally with a lead-off double. Beebe-Jenny's sacrifice moved Zatkowski to third, and
Tate Hartlaub followed with a single to center field to score the run for a 2-0 advantage.
Johannes took it from there as he handcuffed Beloit (12-8, 2-3) over the final two innings.
The teams wrap up the three-game series with one game on Sunday.
