Lawrence knocks off No. 20 UChicago

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The Lawrence University volleyball team rallied for a 3-2 nonconference victory Saturday over the 20th-ranked University of Chicago at the Ratner Center.
Lawrence defeated the Maroons 25-22, 16-25, 25-27, 25-23, 15-9 on Chicago's home court at the Rosalie Resch Invitational.
This is Lawrence's first victory over a ranked opponent since the Vikings defeated No. 14 UW-Eau Claire back on October 3, 2009.
Audrey Weier led a balanced Lawrence attack with 15 kills, and Hazel Cook and Margaret Hahnke added 14 kills apiece. Hahnke also posted a match-high 19 digs.
Setter Ally Corrente delivered a match-high 46 assists to go with 14 digs for the Vikings. Aria Wessel picked up 15 digs, Alayna Geiser had 12 and Amanda Vlkovic added 11 for Lawrence (7-2).
In a see-saw first set, the score was tied at 22-22 when a Weier kill gave Lawrence the lead. After a Chicago error, Sydney Vannett's ace gave the Vikings the set. Vannett finished the match with four service aces.
The Maroons took the second set and Chicago went up two sets to one after scoring three of the final four points in the third set.
Lawrence bounced back in the fourth set, but Chicago managed to build a 21-18 advantage. Kills by Cook and Geiser and a Chicago attack error tied the set at 21-21. The teams traded points and Chicago led 23-22 before a Weier kill tied the score again. After a Chicago error put the Vikings up by one, Vannett delivered another ace to win the set for Lawrence.
That forced a decisive fifth set, and Lawrence built a 7-6 lead in the race to 15 points. The Vikings then ripped off six consecutive points, including two kills apiece from Cook and Weier, to grab a 13-6 lead. Chicago scored the next three points, but kills from Geiser and Hahnke closed out the set and gave Lawrence the victory.
Lawrence posted a 2-1 record on the weekend, also defeating Illinois Tech. Lawrence's only loss came to No. 22 UW-Eau Claire.
