2nd half woes sinks Vikings against the Pioneers

GRINNELL, Iowa — Lawrence fell to Grinnell College, 96-74, in a Midwest Conference matchup on Saturday at Darby Gym. The Vikings recorded 10 steals and 26 bench points but were unable to overcome Grinnell's 10 three-pointers and 28 points from the free-throw line.

The first half began with Lawrence establishing a quick lead through a 3-pointer by Nathan Valentine and a free throw from Casey Schoenecker. Their defense forced multiple turnovers, including a steal by Hogan Demovsky, leading to a fast-break jumper by CJ Campbell. Midway through the half, the Vikings maintained their edge with a combination of perimeter shooting and fast-break opportunities, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Valentine and layups from Nicholas Gouriotis and Caleb Nash.

As the half progressed, Lawrence continued to trade baskets with Grinnell, with Nicholas Gouriotis contributing crucial points in the paint. Despite Grinnell's effort to keep the score close, the Vikings managed to stay competitive through effective ball movement, as evidenced by Campbell's multiple assists. The half closed with Lawrence trailing slightly, 40–37, after Grinnell's late 3-pointer edged them ahead.

Lawrence opened the second half with momentum, tying the game at 40–40 with a fast-break 3-pointer by Demovsky, assisted by Valentine. Despite strong defensive efforts, including defensive rebounds by Demovsky and Valentine, the Vikings faced challenges with turnovers, allowing Grinnell to gain the lead.

Grinnell capitalized on Lawrence's turnovers, extending their lead to 52–42. The Vikings responded with a layup from Cameron Nash and a 3-pointer by Gouriotis to narrow the gap. However, Grinnell continued to push ahead with efficient shooting and free throws, closing the half with a 56–37 run, resulting in a 96–74 lead and a win for the Pioneers
