Late goals sink Vikings against Trine

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University (6-10-0, 1-8-0) fell to Trine University (9-5-2, 5-2-2) 5–1 at home, with Trine breaking the game open with four third-period goals. The team's lone goal came during the first period, while the Thunder's defense held steady, allowing only 28 shots on goal.

Lawrence commenced the first period with possession, winning the opening faceoff. Despite early pressure and several shots, the team did not convert initially. The Vikings' defense, led by goalie Nolan Mahaffey, successfully neutralized Trine's power play midway through the period.

Carter Cloutier broke through at 9:27 with a goal, assisted by Evan Izenstark and Cade Dewolf, giving Lawrence the lead. However, the Thunder responded late in the period with a goal by Michael DiPietra at 19:18, leveling the score. The period concluded with the teams tied at 1–1.

Lawrence started the second period by winning the faceoff, setting an early tone. Despite several shot attempts from Alexey Trischuk and Ethan Look, the team was unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities, with Kyle Kozma making crucial saves for Trine. Dewolf's faceoff victories helped maintain possession, but the period remained scoreless.

During a power play following Blake Tierney's slashing penalty, Lawrence sustained offensive pressure. However, the advantage was cut short by a penalty on Trischuk. Mahaffey was key in goal, making numerous saves to keep Trine from taking the lead.

As the period neared its end, penalties on both sides, including a roughing call on Vladimir Fadeev, resulted in a brief 4-on-4 play. Lawrence continued to press with shots from Cloutier and Roman Cherniak but could not break the deadlock. The period concluded with the score tied at 0–0, with both teams unable to find the back of the net.

The third period began with Trine maintaining their momentum, as Brendan Hill scored an even-strength goal at 8:39, assisted by DiPietra, to extend their lead. Lawrence responded with several attempts, including shots from Jayden Jensen and PJ Noonan, but were unable to convert. The score moved to 2–1 in favor of Trine.

Trine solidified their lead with a goal from Drew Jeffers at 6:45, making it 3–1. Lawrence had a chance to pull back with a power play shortly after, but Trine's defense held firm. A short-handed empty-net goal by Nick White at 5:07 increased Trine's advantage to 4–1.

As the period wound down, Trine added another empty-net goal by Brody Simko with 33 seconds remaining, ending the game with a 5–1 victory. Lawrence's efforts in the final minutes were not enough to close the gap, and the period concluded with Trine's four-goal surge.
