Vikings drop home contest to Thunder

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University (6-11-0, 1-9-0) fell to Trine University (10-5-2, 6-2-2), 5-0, at home. Trine scored twice in the second period and added three more in the third, while their goalie made 20 saves to secure the shutout.

The first period began with the Vikings showing strong control at the faceoff circle, winning several early faceoffs, including one by Cade Dewolf. Despite Trine's aggressive shooting, Lawrence's defense, led by Nolan Mahaffey in goal, successfully kept the visitors at bay with key saves and blocked shots from Kenny Sutton and Adam Brzezicki. Lawrence capitalized on a power play opportunity when Trine's Sam Antenucci was penalized for holding, but their attempts to score were thwarted by Thunder's goaltender, Kyle Kozma. The period ended scoreless, with both teams unable to find the back of the net.

Lawrence encountered a challenging second period, marked initially by a defensive stance as Mahaffey made crucial saves, particularly during Trine's early attacks. However, a boarding penalty on Ethan Beaumont at 11:43 led to a power-play goal by Trine's Jack Cooper, assisted by Drew Jeffers and Alexander Babich, giving Trine a 1-0 lead. After the Thunder extended their lead with another goal from Max Marquette at 7:31, Lawrence had multiple power play opportunities. Despite their efforts, including several shots from Alexey Trischuk and Carter Cloutier, they were unable to capitalize. Lawrence finished the period trailing 2-0.

In the third period, the Vikings faced a challenging situation as Trine extended their lead with three goals. Nick White scored twice for the visitors, first at 17:39 with assists from Brody Simko and Sean Henry, and again at 15:05. Babich added another goal at 9:57 with help from Simko and White. Lawrence struggled to find the back of the net despite multiple attempts, with notable saves by Trine's Kozma. The period concluded with a 5-0 victory for the Thunder.
