Vikings can't hold off Scots

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence (9-7, 2-5 Midwest Conference) fell to Monmouth (IL) (13-4, 8-0 Midwest Conference) 75-62 on Saturday at Alexander Gym. Despite holding a seven-point lead at halftime, Lawrence was outscored 45-25 in the second half.

Lawrence opened the first half with a strong display, quickly establishing control with a 3-pointer by Nicholas Gouriotis assisted by Nathan Valentine at 19:17. The team maintained momentum as Valentine added a layup, contributing to an early lead. Casey Schoenecker further extended the advantage with a layup at 17:02, showcasing effective teamwork and ball movement.

CJ Campbell's shooting from beyond the arc proved crucial, as he connected on multiple 3-pointers, including a significant shot at 1:20, assisted by Nolan Koch. Lawrence's defense was active, registering three blocks and limiting Monmouth's opportunities in the paint. Despite Monmouth's efforts to stay in contention, Lawrence closed the half with a seven-point lead, 37-30.

Lawrence opened the second half with a defensive play as Valentine recorded a steal in the first 13 seconds. Schoenecker contributed a layup at 19:16, assisted by Campbell, to maintain a narrow lead early on. However, Monmouth's offense surged with a series of effective plays in the paint, led by Zay Brown and Jason Huber, would help in closing the gap and eventually overtaking Lawrence.

Despite Schoenecker's efforts with multiple layups and a timely 3-pointer from Valentine at 8:58, Monmouth maintained momentum. The visitors capitalized on several turnovers and extended their lead further, aided by consistent scoring from the free-throw line. Lawrence struggled to regain control.
