APPLETON, Wis. ā Lawrence University (6-12-0, 1-10-0) was defeated by Marian University (4-12-2, 3-8-0), 7ā2, at home on Friday night. The Vikings' power-play goal in the second period was not enough to offset the Sabres' three power-play goals and one short-handed goal.
Lawrence initiated the first period aggressively, securing the opening faceoff and launching an early attempt by
Robby Pustulka, which was saved by Marian's goalie, Nicholas Von Kaufmann. Despite consistent offensive pressure from the Vikings, including multiple shots by
Ethan Johnson and
Jeb Dee, Marian's defense and goaltending held firm.
Marian capitalized on their opportunities, with Eemil Rautio scoring at 12:29, assisted by Cole Carlson and Caden Carlson. This was followed shortly by another goal from Cole Carlson at 9:44, extending the Sabres' lead. Lawrence's defense, with blocks by
Kenny Sutton and
Jacob Jakusz, managed to limit further damage, closing the period trailing 2-0.
The Sabres opened the second period with a power-play goal by Brendan Bottem at 00:47, extending their lead. Despite the Vikings gaining possession on a faceoff shortly after, Marian capitalized again with a short-handed goal by Bottem at 03:53.Ā
Lawrence responded later in the period with
Ethan Beaumont scoring an even-strength goal at 14:14, assisted by Pustulka, narrowing the gap. As the period progressed, Johnson added a power-play goal at 17:29, assisted by Beaumont, bringing the score to 5-2. The period concluded with the Vikings cutting the deficit but still trailing Marian.
The third period began with the home team taking control of the initial faceoff, seeking to shift the game's momentum.
Ben Winkelmann nearly cut into Marian's lead with a shot hitting the pipe early in the period, but it remained out. The Sabres capitalized on a power-play opportunity at 13:43 with Caden Carlson's goal, extending their lead.
Despite multiple offensive efforts, including shots from
Nicholas Townsend and
Carter Cloutier, the Vikings were unable to find the back of the net. Marian added another power-play goal by Rautio at 10:33, solidifying their position. The period closed with Lawrence maintaining offensive pressure but unable to alter the scoreboard, resulting in a final score of 7-2 and a win for the visitors.Ā
