Vikings defense shines in rout of UW-Superior

SUPERIOR, Wis. — Lawrence University (10-2, 3-0 Midwest Conference) defeated the University of Wisconsin-Superior (3-10, 0-0 UMAC), 70-45, on Saturday, with a decisive 25-point margin, led by 23 points off turnovers.

Lawrence initiated the first quarter with a strong presence inside the paint. Sophie Morey scored the first points with a jumper just 19 seconds into the game. Olivia Kesti contributed with early assists, helping the Vikings establish an early 4-0 lead. They maintained pressure, capitalizing on defensive rebounds, and extended their lead to 6-4 after Charlotte Brennan's successful free throws.

Midway through the quarter, Kate Adams added to Lawrence's momentum with a jumper and a 3-pointer, pushing their lead to 11-4. Despite a late push from the Yellow jackets, who narrowed the gap with a 3-pointer from Kyra Latvala, the Vikings managed to hold their lead. The quarter concluded with Lawrence ahead 13-11, thanks to a layup from Adams with under a minute remaining.

Lawrence capitalized on an early momentum shift in the second quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers from Josie Eager and Emma Moya, extending their lead to 19–11. Throughout the quarter, the Vikings' defensive pressure forced seven turnovers, resulting in key scoring opportunities, including a fastbreak layup by Morey that pushed their advantage further.

Brennan and Maggie Jarzemsky contributed from the free-throw line, maintaining Lawrence's offensive rhythm. Despite a late rally by Wisconsin-Superior, highlighted by a 3-pointer and consecutive fastbreak layups, the Vikings closed the quarter strong with a 3-pointer from Adams at the buzzer. Lawrence led 37–26 at the end of the second quarter.

Lawrence seized momentum in the third quarter, capitalizing on their opportunities in the paint with 14 points and outscoring the Yellowjackets 22–8. Brennan led the charge with a layup and a 3-pointer, contributing significantly to the team's scoring efforts. Morey added critical baskets, further extending the lead.

Efficient ball movement was a highlight as the Vikings assisted on five of their nine baskets. Defensively, the team recorded two blocks and limited Wisconsin-Superior to four field goals. Lawrence closed the quarter maintaining a strong lead, 59–34.

Lawrence maintained control in the fourth quarter with a key performance by Adams, who contributed significantly with a 3-pointer at 8:31 and three consecutive free throws at 6:42. The team capitalized on defensive pressure, recording four steals, which limited the Yellowjackets' opportunities. Morey added a layup at 5:47 to further extend the lead.

Despite Wisconsin-Superior's efforts, including a late three-point play by Sydney Crawford, Lawrence's defense remained steadfast. The quarter ended with both teams scoring 11 points, keeping Lawrence's advantage intact at 70-45 and the Vikings picking up the road win.Ā
