Nash powers Vikings to home win over Blueboys

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence (12-11, 5-9 Midwest Conference) secured a decisive 78-61 victory over Illinois College (10-13, 7-7 Midwest Conference) on Saturday at Alexander Gym. The Vikings controlled the game with a strong second half, outscoring the Blueboys 41-31 after the break.

Lawrence opened the first half with a balanced attack, matching Illinois College point-for-point early on. Caleb Nash and Casey Schoenecker contributed with key plays in the paint, while Hogan Demovsky and CJ Campbell connected on perimeter shots to keep the scoring pace. The Vikings demonstrated effective ball movement, tallying nine assists and out-rebounding their opponent by a narrow margin.

In the latter part of the half, Lawrence capitalized on fast breaks and second-chance opportunities, extending their lead with a 13–4 run. Despite Illinois College's attempts to close the gap with 3-point shooting, the Vikings maintained control. The half concluded with Lawrence leading 37–30, setting a solid foundation for the remainder of the contest.

Lawrence opened the second half with a strong offensive performance, increasing its lead with efficient shooting and solid defense. Schoenecker and Nash played pivotal roles, combining for multiple baskets in the paint and contributing to a fast break that pushed the lead further. Schoenecker's defensive rebound and subsequent layup at 17:15, assisted by Nash, exemplified the team's control of the tempo.

As the half progressed, Lawrence continued to capitalize on scoring opportunities, with Campbell hitting a 3-pointer to extend the advantage. The Blueboys attempted to close the gap but struggled to maintain momentum against Lawrence's steady scoring and defensive stops. Campbell's free throws and subsequent 3-pointer helped maintain a comfortable margin.

The Vikings closed the half maintaining their lead, with Nathan Valentine sinking free throws in the final minute to cement a 78–61 advantage at the end of the game.
