APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University men's lacrosse team delivered a dramatic finish Thursday night, scoring the game-winning goal in overtime to defeat Carthage College 8–7 at Banta Bowl.
Henry Fischer netted the overtime winner with 3:13 remaining in the extra period, finishing a pass from Joe McCabe to lift the Vikings to the victory. The win moves Lawrence to 3–3 on the season while Carthage falls to 4–4.
Lawrence struck quickly to open the contest. Judah Goehring scored the game's first goal early in the opening quarter off a pass from Emmett Eischens, and Brody Herr followed later in the period with a goal assisted by Robbie Spielmann to give the Vikings a 2–0 lead after the first.
Carthage battled back in the second quarter to tie the game at 2–2, but Lawrence answered with a strong offensive stretch. Spielmann sparked the Vikings with a goal assisted by Goehring before Eischens and Spielmann added two more tallies to help Lawrence take a 5–3 advantage into halftime.
The Vikings extended the lead to three in the third quarter when Goehring converted on a man-up opportunity off a feed from Fischer to make it 6–3. Carthage trimmed the deficit late in the period and then surged in the fourth quarter, scoring three unanswered goals to take a 7–6 lead with just over seven minutes remaining.
Lawrence responded quickly as Fischer scored the equalizer with 6:06 left in regulation on an assist from Spielmann, sending the game to overtime tied at 7–7.
In the extra period, the Vikings controlled possession and Fischer delivered the decisive goal off McCabe's assist to secure the comeback win.
Spielmann led the Lawrence attack with four points on two goals and two assists, while Fischer and Goehring each added two goals. Eischens chipped in a goal and an assist, and Herr added a goal.
Defensively, goalkeeper Gavin Reiter turned in a strong performance with 15 saves to help hold off the Firebirds. Cody Brekke also played a key role at the faceoff X, winning 9 of 10 draws for the Vikings.
