Big Sixth Inning Lifts Oberlin Past Vikings

Davenport, Fla. — The Lawrence University baseball team rallied from an early deficit to take the lead midway through the game, but a big sixth inning from Oberlin proved to be the difference in an 11-8 loss on Sunday.

After falling behind 1-0 early, the Vikings got the offense going in the third inning. Steven Baudendistel sparked the rally with a single, and AJ Desantiago followed with a base hit before Sage Beebe-Jenny delivered an RBI single to tie the game. A wild pitch and a groundout from Ben Gutowski brought in two more runs as Lawrence grabbed a 3-1 lead.

Oberlin responded in the fourth with a three-run frame to jump back in front 4-3, but the Vikings answered immediately with one of their strongest innings of the game. Baudendistel delivered a clutch triple to tie the score, Desantiago reached and later scored on an error, and Beebe-Jenny added another RBI knock. Lawrence continued to apply pressure with patience at the plate, drawing multiple walks, and took a 7-4 lead after four innings.

Ethan Sitter provided a key moment on the mound in the fifth, striking out the side to keep the Vikings in front and maintain the momentum.

The turning point came in the sixth inning when Oberlin erupted for seven runs, using a combination of extra-base hits and timely hitting to reclaim control at 11-7.

Lawrence continued to battle late, adding a run in the seventh when Nathan Depew singled and eventually scored on a groundout from Beebe-Jenny, but the Vikings were unable to complete the comeback.

Beebe-Jenny led the offense with a 2-for-4 performance, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Baudendistel also had a strong day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI. Desantiago added two hits and two runs scored, while Dylan Keelan reached base three times and scored once.

The Vikings showed patience offensively, drawing nine walks and collecting eight hits, while also swiping multiple bases to keep pressure on Oberlin throughout the game.
