Game Recap: Baseball |

Vikings Battle but Drop Two to Grinnell on the Road

Grinnell, Iowa — The Lawrence University baseball team showed consistent offensive production across both games but was unable to overcome a pair of decisive innings by Grinnell College, falling in a Midwest Conference doubleheader at Pioneer Park.

The Vikings totaled 20 hits across the two games and generated scoring opportunities throughout the day, but Grinnell capitalized in key moments, using explosive middle innings in both contests to secure the sweep.

In Game 1, Grinnell broke open a competitive contest with a seven-run fourth inning to pull away for a 17-6 victory.

Lawrence's offense was active throughout, finishing with 10 hits and spreading production up and down the lineup. Sage Beebe-Jenny led the Vikings with a 3-for-4 performance, adding an RBI and consistently applying pressure at the plate. Steven Baudendistel added two hits and scored twice, including a double that helped spark Lawrence's offense.

Nathan Depew delivered a strong performance with two RBIs, while Myles Brincks and Aeneas Pichardo each added RBIs to round out a balanced attack.

The Vikings broke through with two runs in the fourth inning and continued to chip away with runs in the sixth and seventh, showing resilience despite the deficit. However, Grinnell responded with timely hitting and extra-base production in the middle innings to maintain control.

In Game 2, Grinnell once again used a massive inning to seize control, scoring seven runs in the fourth to break open a tight game on the way to another 17-6 win.

Lawrence remained competitive early, trailing just 4-2 after pushing across a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Steven Baudendistel came around to score in the frame, and Nathan Depew added an RBI single as the Vikings capitalized on opportunities to stay within striking distance.

The Vikings again recorded 10 hits, with Beebe-Jenny leading the way with three hits for the second straight game. Baudendistel added two hits and scored twice, while Depew drove in two runs. Aeneas Pichardo and Myles Brincks also contributed RBIs as Lawrence continued to get production throughout the lineup.

Lawrence showed continued fight in the later innings, plating two runs in the sixth behind RBI hits from Brincks and Beebe-Jenny. The Vikings added two more in the seventh, highlighted by an RBI single from Pichardo and another run-scoring play from Depew.

On the mound, Lawrence worked through multiple arms, but Grinnell capitalized on defensive miscues in the fourth inning, with several runs in the frame coming unearned. The Pioneers added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings to maintain separation.
