Vikings Control Match in Convincing Road Victory

Monmouth, Illinois — The Lawrence University men's tennis team turned in one of its most complete performances of the season Saturday morning, rolling to a 6-1 victory over Monmouth behind a strong showing in both doubles and singles play.

The Vikings wasted little time taking control of the match, securing the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. William Reichen and Benjamin Hoppe set the tone with a 6-3 victory at the top spot, playing clean, aggressive tennis to keep Monmouth on its heels. At No. 2, Gabriel Garcia and Will Phillips delivered in a tight battle, grinding out a 7-6 win to clinch the point and give Lawrence early momentum.

Monmouth picked up the lone doubles win at No. 3, but the Vikings quickly responded once singles play began.

Lawrence dominated across the lineup in singles, winning five of six matches — all in straight sets — to put the match away decisively. Reichen led the charge at No. 1 singles with a commanding 6-1, 6-3 win, controlling points from the baseline and dictating tempo throughout. Hoppe followed with a sharp 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 2, continuing the Vikings' momentum.

Garcia added another point at No. 3 singles, battling through a competitive second set to secure a 6-2, 7-5 win, while Owen Horton delivered one of the most dominant performances of the day at No. 4 with a 6-3, 6-0 victory. Phillips capped the straight-set wins at No. 5, cruising to a 6-4, 6-1 result.

The only extended match came at No. 6 singles, where Xander Priest showed resilience after dropping the first two sets, pushing the match to a decisive super tiebreak before falling 4-6, 1-6, 7-10.
