Galesburg, Illinois — Lawrence softball battled through a competitive doubleheader against Knox, responding in a big way after a tough opener to earn a split on the road.
Game one turned into a grind from the start, with both teams fighting for every run. Lawrence struck first, grabbing a 1-0 lead behind an RBI from Gillian Guerriero, but Knox answered in the fifth and held on for a 2-1 decision.
The Vikings had opportunities throughout, putting runners on and applying pressure, but couldn't find the timely hit to break through. Zoe Doherty led the way with a triple, while Guerriero continued to produce offensively. In the circle, Avery Chilson kept Lawrence right there all game, allowing just two runs (one earned) and striking out seven in a strong outing despite the result.Â
Lawrence flipped the script in game two — and did it with fight.
After falling behind 6-3 midway through, the Vikings responded with a surge of offense and completely shifted the momentum. Lawrence rattled off five unanswered runs, including a decisive three-run sixth inning, to take control and close out an 8-6 comeback win.
Anitza Gutierrez sparked everything at the top, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and constantly putting pressure on Knox. Zoe Doherty delivered again in clutch spots with three RBIs, and Gillian Guerriero added a triple and key RBI as the Vikings capitalized on every opening.
In the circle, Georgia Sedlack battled early before Kylan Arndt stepped in and steadied things, earning the win in relief. Avery Chilson then slammed the door late, locking down the final outs to secure the comeback and the split.
