Appleton, Wisconsin — Lawrence split its nonconference doubleheader with North Park on Sunday at Whiting Field, dropping Game 1 6-3 before responding with a 3-2 win in Game 2.
Game 1
North Park took the opener 6-3 after pulling away late, despite a strong middle-inning surge from the Vikings. Lawrence broke through in the fourth inning with three runs on four hits to take a 3-1 lead. Avery Chilson delivered the key swing with a two-run single through the right side, and Callie Rozak followed with an RBI single to cap the rally.
North Park answered in the fifth inning, scoring twice to even the game at 3-3. The Vikings continued to put runners on base but were unable to push across another run, leaving the game tied heading into the late innings.
In the eighth, North Park capitalized with three runs on timely hitting to take control. Lawrence finished the game with eight hits, including multiple baserunners in several innings, but could not generate the clutch hit needed to regain the lead.
Game 2
Lawrence responded with a composed 3-2 victory in the nightcap, using early offense and a strong outing in the circle to secure the split.
The Vikings set the tone in the first inning, drawing four walks and turning the pressure into two runs. An RBI walk and a sacrifice fly allowed Lawrence to take advantage without recording a hit in the inning, jumping out to a 2-0 lead.
Lawrence added an important insurance run in the fourth inning. After a leadoff single and aggressive baserunning, Anitza Gutierrez delivered an RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0.
North Park chipped away with a run in the fifth and another in the sixth, cutting the deficit to one. Kylan Arndt remained steady in the circle, working through traffic and limiting damage in key moments.
Arndt completed the game, allowing two runs on six hits while keeping North Park from finding the tying run late. Lawrence totaled five hits in the game and made the necessary defensive plays down the stretch to close out the 3-2 win and earn the split.
