Appleton, Wis --- Lawrence University men's tennis faced a tough Midwest Conference matchup against nationally ranked No. 23 Grinnell College on Saturday at the Fox Cities Racquet Club, falling 7-0.
Grinnell, which entered the match riding a dominant conference winning streak, showcased its depth early by sweeping all three doubles points. The Vikings' top pairing of Benjamin Hoppe and William Reichen dropped a 6-1 decision at No. 1, while Gabriel Garcia and Will Phillips fell 6-1 at No. 2. The duo of Owen Horton and Xander Priest battled at No. 3 but came up short 6-2.
In singles play, Lawrence continued to compete across the lineup against a deep Grinnell squad. At No. 1 singles, William Reichen fell 7-5, 6-2 in one of the tighter matches of the day. Benjamin Hoppe faced Devansh Punjabi at No. 2, falling 6-0, 6-1, while Gabriel Garcia dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision at No. 3.
Will Phillips competed at No. 4 but fell 6-1, 6-1, and Jonathan Myszka at No. 5 battled before falling 6-1, 6-0. At No. 6, Will Lewis rounded out the lineup with a 6-2, 6-1 result.
Despite the final scoreline, the Vikings showed fight throughout the lineup against one of the Midwest Conference's top programs and will look to build on the experience moving forward in conference play.
