McCullough picks up singles victory against Cornell

APPLETON, Wis. — Arisa McCullough earned a straight-set victory at No. 5 singles Sunday to highlight the Lawrence University women's tennis team's 6-1 setback against Cornell College at the Lawrence Courts.

McCullough delivered the Vikings' point with a strong performance against Kortney Travis. McCullough took a competitive opening set 6-4 before finishing off the match with a 6-3 victory in the second set.

Lawrence nearly added another point at No. 6 singles, where Rachael Pofahl went the distance with Isabella Wallin. Pofahl dominated the opening set 6-0, but Wallin answered by taking a tight second set 7-6 (4). Wallin then captured the deciding match tiebreak 10-3.

Cornell grabbed the early advantage by sweeping doubles play. Clara Hills and Logan Kane fell 6-0 at No. 1 doubles, while Tess McGlenn and Misora Sky Shinohara dropped a 6-1 decision at No. 2. McCullough teamed with Madelena Priest at No. 3 and fell 6-0.

The Rams carried that momentum into singles and won five of the six matches.

Hills battled Michaela Clark at the top spot before falling 6-2, 6-1, and Kane dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision to Macallister Graves at No. 2. McGlenn fell to Tansy Graves 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3, while Shinohara was defeated by Emmie Kinder 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4.

McCullough then broke through for Lawrence at No. 5 with her 6-4, 6-3 victory before Pofahl closed the dual with her three-set battle at No. 6.
