APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University women's tennis team used a strong showing throughout the lineup Saturday to earn a 5-2 nonconference victory over Milwaukee School of Engineering.
Lawrence grabbed the opening point by winning two of the three doubles matches. Tess McGlenn and Sky Shinohara earned a 6-3 victory over Stephania Gonzalez and Amelia Segelstrom at No. 2, while Arisa McCullough and Madelena Priest matched that score with a 6-3 win over Simona Sulminas and Isela Sandoval Luis at No. 3.
MSOE took the No. 1 doubles match as Ana Clara Kamiyama and Sadie Dakay defeated Clara Hills and Logan Kane 6-3, but the Vikings carried a 1-0 advantage into singles play.
Hills delivered one of the biggest wins of the afternoon at No. 1 singles. After taking the opening set 7-5 against Kamiyama, Hills dropped the second 6-3 before prevailing 10-8 in the deciding match tiebreaker.
Shinohara also rallied for a three-set victory at No. 4. After Sulminas took the first set 6-3, Shinohara answered with a 6-3 victory in the second and controlled the deciding set for a 6-1 win.
McCullough was dominant at No. 5 singles, defeating Segelstrom 6-3, 6-2, while Rachael Pofahl rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Autumn Thoresen at No. 6.
MSOE picked up its two singles victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Dakay defeated Kane 6-2, 6-1, and Gonzalez topped McGlenn 7-6(1), 6-1.
