Match Recap: Men's Tennis | | Benjamin Hoppe

New Faces Help Lead Vikings to a Season Opener Victory

The end of the 2025-26 Men's tennis season was capped off by now sophomore William Reichen winning the MWC Individual Tournament. Additionally, other sophomores, then freshmen, posted impressive results throughout the season. Will Lewis and Jonathan Myszka won the most doubles matches together for the Vikings. Myszka also earned MWC Performer of the Week and Viking of the Week honors. This season, Lawrence brought in a number of first-years and transfers in addition to first year head coach Tate Whitlinger, who all helped the Vikings start the season undefeated.

On September 27th, the men's tennis team travelled to Milwaukee to take on Wisconsin Lutheran College in their season opener. The Vikings had beaten the Warriors last year 6-1, and sought to repeat their success this season.

The Vikings opened the match with a strong showing at doubles. First-year Nevan Glenn and Junior transfer Tristin Yun won the first match of the day with a 6-2 victory over the Warriors's Cameron Borchert and Aidan Mattek. Junior Benjamin Hoppe and Reichen shortly followed Glenn and Yun's win with one of their own, defeating Myles Harris and Beckett Johnson 6-1, earning the Vikings the doubles point. Seniors Xander Priest and Will Phillips capped off the doubles matches with a 7-5 victory, giving the team some more momentum heading into singles play.

Reichen, Yun, and senior Owen Horton led the way with dominant performances at singles. All won with convincing scorelines of 6-0, 6-1. This earned the Vikings three more points and the victory, as Lawrence had one the minimum four out of seven points to win the match as a team. Following up these performances was Myszka, who won by just as convincing a scoreline of 6-2, 6-0 over Wisconsin Lutheran's Austin Yegres.

The closest matches of the day came from Glenn and Hoppe. After a dominant first set win of 6-0, Glenn faced some challenges in the second set. Ultimately, Wisconsin Lutheran's Beckett Johnson took the second set 6-1, forcing a final set 10-point tiebreaker. Glenn was able to reset    , and won the tiebreaker 10-7 to earn his first collegiate victory. Finally, Hoppe came through with the final win of the day. After starting 1-4 down in the first set, Hoppe forced a set tiebreaker, which he ultimately won 7-4. Hoppe got off to a stronger start in the second set, controlling service games and rallies. He was able to win the second set 6-1, thus rounding out the matches.

The Vikings came home with a 7-0 victory, only dropping one set in the process. This was an encouraging start to the season for the Vikings as they prepare to travel to Gustavus Adolphus College this weekend to compete at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Tournament.
