APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University men's soccer team battled Rockford University to a 1-1 draw Wednesday night at the Banta Bowl.
The Vikings controlled much of the attacking play, finishing with an 11-6 advantage in shots and putting nine attempts on goal compared to just two for Rockford. Lawrence also held a 10-6 edge in corner kicks.
Rockford struck first in the 16th minute when Dasha Curiel found the back of the net to give the Regents a 1-0 advantage. Lawrence continued to pressure the Rockford defense throughout the opening half, forcing goalkeeper Wesley Pritzlaff into three saves before the break.
The Vikings increased the pressure after halftime, recording seven shots and five corner kicks over the final 45 minutes. William Mikkelsen, Isaac Newcomb, Emiliano Garcia Fadanalli and Colt Johnson all put attempts on frame as Lawrence searched for the equalizer.
Lawrence finally broke through in the 79th minute. Chuck Schlichtmann set up Grayson Ogren, who finished the opportunity at the 78:09 mark to pull the Vikings even at 1-1.
The Vikings continued to push for a winner, with Newcomb putting another shot on goal in the 86th minute, but Pritzlaff made the save to preserve the tie. The Rockford goalkeeper finished with eight saves as Lawrence placed nine of its 11 shots on target.
Mikkelsen led Lawrence with four shots, including three on goal, while Newcomb and Pablo Silveira each finished with two attempts. Cristian Puebla played all 90 minutes in goal for the Vikings and made one save.
Lawrence moves to 1-0-1 on the season.
