APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University men's soccer team continued its strong start to the season Tuesday, using a balanced offensive attack to defeat Marian University 4-2 at the Banta Bowl. The victory improved the Vikings to 2-0-1 on the season.
Lawrence controlled the opening half and broke through in the 31st minute. William Plougmand Mikkelsen scored his first goal of the season at 30:15, finishing a setup from Grayson Ogren to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.
The Vikings doubled the advantage just over seven minutes later. Chuck Schlichtmann set up Quill Tegenfeldt-Pfohman, who found the net at 37:38 to send Lawrence into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Lawrence wasted little time adding to its lead after the break. Mikkelsen returned the favor to Ogren in the 54th minute, providing the assist on Ogren's second goal of the season to push the advantage to 3-0.
Marian pulled one back at 68:13, but Lawrence answered less than two minutes later. Tegenfeldt-Pfohman struck again at 70:02 off an assist from Isaac Newcomb, giving the Vikings a 4-1 cushion and completing the first two-goal performance of Tegenfeldt-Pfohman's Lawrence career. Marian added a penalty kick in the 73rd minute for the final margin.
The Vikings held a commanding 15-3 advantage in shots and put seven attempts on target compared to two for Marian. Lawrence also finished with a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Mikkelsen led the Vikings with five shots while Ogren added three and Tegenfeldt-Pfohman scored on both of his attempts.
Cristian Puebla played all 90 minutes in goal to earn the victory as Lawrence remained unbeaten through its first three matches of the season.
