GRINNELL, Iowa --
Jackson Bertman and Mattie Letendre were the top finishers Friday for the Lawrence University swimming and diving teams on the opening day of the Pioneer Classic.
  Bertman had the best result on the day as he took second in the 3-meter diving at Osgood Pool on the campus of Grinnell College. Bertman was the runner-up with a score of 376.95. He was edged by Gustavus Adolphus College's Andrew Jensen, who was first with 419.60.
  Letendre was the top individual finisher for the Lawrence women as she took fifth in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:18.16.
  Letendre also swam on the top two relay teams for the Vikings. The 400 medley relay team of Letendre, Stella Macfarlane, Irina Starostin and Emily Hornung took sixth in 4:15.78. The same group of women teamed up to take 11th in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:46.28.
  The other top finish for the Lawrence men came from the 200 freestyle relay team of
Eamon Rougvie,
Alex Bemben,
Keegan Mencke and
Davis Wukovits. That group placed 15th in 1:33.61.
  The Lawrence men are sixth in the team standings with 68 points, and Gustavus is first with 284. The Lawrence women are seventh with 66 points, and Gustavus leads with 280.
  The meet wraps up with a full day of competition on Saturday.
