Winebrenner breaks steeplechase record at UWL

Riley Winebrenner broke the Lawrence record in the steeplechase on Thursday at UW-La Crosse
LA CROSSE, Wis. -- The Lawrence University track and field teams sent two athletes to the UW-La Crosse Final Qualifier on Thursday, but both of them had great days.
Riley Winebrenner broke the Lawrence women's record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, and Ian Thomas took the title in the men's javelin.
Winebrenner, a sophomore, raced to fourth place in the event in a time 11:36.65 and broke the Lawrence record by just under a second. The mark of 11:37.64 was set by Sally Schonfeld back in 2002. Winebrenner used a late surge to grab the record as she covered the final 400 meters in 1:28.93, and that was her second-fastest lap of the race.
Thomas, the two-time Midwest Conference champion in the javelin, won the event with a throw of 184 feet, 11 inches. Thomas won the event by almost 17 feet with second place going to Viterbo University's Gabe Holderby, whose best throw was 168-1.
