APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University women's tennis team used strong singles play Saturday to defeat Monmouth College 5-4 in a Midwest Conference match at Fox Cities Racquet Club.
The victory was the first collegiate win for Lawrence first-year coach
Eric Schacht.
The Vikings trailed 2-1 after the doubles competition as
Lizzy Angemi and
Tess McGlenn picked up an 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles.
Lawrence came back strong in singles as Angemi posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 5, and
Fanta Jatta then completed a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6.
Anna Vanden Acker pushed the Vikings close to the win when she won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2.
Monmouth came up with wins at Nos. 1 and 3 singles to tie the match at 4-4.
The No. 4 singles match was the last one on the court, and
Claire Bildsten closed out Kimber Calvert 6-3, 7-5 to give the Vikings the victory.
Lawrence is now 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the league. Monmouth falls to 3-5, 0-3 in the MWC.
