Lawrence men grab second at Private College Championships

Will Phillips won the 100-yard freestyle at the Private College Championships.
    KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's swimming and diving team grabbed second place Saturday at the Wisconsin Private College Championships at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center.
    Lawrence finished with 125 points to secure the runner-up spot. The Lawrence women finished fourth with 89 points.
    Will Phillips grabbed a title for the Vikings as he raced to victory in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.66 seconds and teammate Sebastian Stacey was second in 48.79 seconds. Phillips also swam to fifth in the 200 freestyle in 1:48.98, and teammate Adam Martin was sixth in 1:58.44.
    Diver Jackson Bertman took home a pair of second-place finishes. Bertman was second on the 3-meter board with a score of 210.20, and he took second in the 1-meter competition with a score of 220.10.
    Keegan Mencke raced to second in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:24.70 and seventh in the 200 individual medley in 2:04.68. Aaron Harris grabbed third in the 200 breaststroke in 2:18.51 and took eighth in the 50 freestyle in 23.40 seconds.
    Leighton Frater grabbed fifth in the 100 backstroke in 58.92 seconds, and Michael Thorson raced to fifth in the 200 backstroke in 2:05.22
    Leading the relays was the 400 freestyle relay of Thorson, Martin, Mencke and Phillips, which took third in 3:25.87. The 400 medley relay team of Frater, Harris, Stacey and Phillips also was third in 3:43.11. The 200 freestyle relay team of Phillips, Harris, Kevin Byrne and Mencke was fifth in 1:33.42, and the 200 medley relay team of Frater, Mencke, Stacey and Byrne was eighth in 1:49.29.    
    Irina Starostin led the way for the women as she took the title in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:01.21. Teammate Kirain Jayasinghe took third in 1:04.37. Starostin also grabbed third in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:33.15 and fourth in the 100 freestyle in 57.24 seconds.
    Diver Chloe VandHey took second in the 1-meter competition with a score of 162.25, and she grabbed fourth place on the 3-meter board with a score of 125.50.
    Jayasinghe also took fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:16.10 with teammate Katarina Stanley in seventh at 1:18.39.
    Kylie White raced to seventh in the 400 individual medley in 5:23.96, eighth in the 100 backstroke in 1:09.94 and eighth in the 200 backstroke in 2:31.97. Ella Lee raced to seventh in the 1,650 freestyle in 21:13.67 and was eighth in the 200 freestyle in 2:17.40. Abigail Herrick took seventh in the 200 breaststroke in 3:01.91.
    The 200 medley relay team of White, Stanley, Jayasinghe and Starostin took sixth in 2:03.97. The 400 freestyle relay team of Jayasinghe, Kristyn Landon, Ashe and Starostin raced to sixth in 4:07.55, and the 400 medley relay team of Olivia Ashe, Herrick, Lee and Landon swam to eighth place in 4:50.22.
