Appleton, Wis. — The Lawrence University men's tennis team dropped an 8–1 nonconference decision to Wartburg College on Saturday at Lawrence.
The Vikings earned their lone point of the match at the top of the singles lineup, where William Reichen posted a convincing 6–2, 6–2 victory over Robert Matera at No. 1 singles. Wartburg, however, grabbed early momentum by sweeping the doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, the Lawrence pairing of Reichen and Benjamin Hoppe fell 6–1 to Matera and Benny Ramker, while Gabriel Garcia and Will Lewis were edged 6–2 at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, Will Phillips and Owen Horton also dropped a 6–2 decision.
In singles play, Wartburg secured five additional wins across the lineup. Hoppe pushed his opponent in a competitive match at No. 2 singles before falling 6–2, 7–6(1). Garcia competed at No. 3 singles but was defeated 6–0, 6–3, while Lewis dropped a 6–1, 6–2 decision at No. 4. Phillips fell 6–1, 6–2 at No. 5 singles, and Horton rounded out the match with a 7–5, 6–1 loss at No. 6 singles.
