Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Vikings Fall to Cornell, Reichen Earns Gritty Victory at No. 1

Appleton, Wisconsin — The Lawrence University men's tennis team fell 6-1 to Cornell College in Midwest Conference play on Saturday morning at the Fox Cities Racquet Club.

Cornell seized early control of the match by sweeping all three doubles flights to take a 1-0 lead, putting the Vikings in an early hole heading into singles play.

Lawrence responded with a strong showing at the top of the lineup, where William Reichen delivered the highlight of the day in a gritty three-set battle at No. 1 singles. Reichen dominated the opening set 6-0 before dropping the second 1-6, but regrouped and took control in the decisive third set to earn a 6-2 victory and secure the Vikings' lone point of the match.

The Rams answered by claiming the remaining five singles matches, though the Vikings were competitive throughout the lineup. Gabriel Garcia pushed his No. 3 singles matchup late, falling 6-0, 7-5 in one of the tighter contests of the day. Benjamin Hoppe (No. 2), Owen Horton (No. 4), Will Phillips (No. 5), and Jonathan Myszka (No. 6) each battled but came up short as Cornell closed out the team victory.
