Monmouth takes pair from Vikings

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Monmouth College softball team swept a Midwest Conference doubleheader from Lawrence University on Saturday at Whiting Field.

The Scots pulled away for a 12-3 win in the opener and used one big inning for an 8-2 victory in the nightcap.

In the opener, Monmouth (18-17, 10-8 MWC) took control with three runs in the third and sealed the win with five runs in the sixth. Kaylee Kurtz went 2-for-4, drove in four runs and scored a pair of runs.

Brianna Perschall allowed five hits and one run over 2.2 innings of relief to get the win. Lawrence's Madeline MacLean allowed eight hits and seven runs over 3.1 innings and took the loss.

MacLean went 2-for-3 at the plate and blasted a two-run homer to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead in the first. Amanda Karnatz went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, and Sofie Pedersen was 2-for-3 for Lawrence (14-20, 5-13).

In the nightcap, the Scots broke the game open early with six runs in the second inning. Rebecca Gallis went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and drove in four runs for Monmouth.

Liz Hippen gave up five hits over seven innings, struck out eight and walked one to pick up the win for Monmouth. Lawrence's Emilia Jackson allowed 11 hits, struck out five and walked five in taking the loss.

Karnatz went 2-for-3 with two doubles and scored both of Lawrence's runs.
