Box Score CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Lawrence University softball team lost a 9-8 heartbreaker to Macalester College in eight innings on Tuesday at the National Training Center.
Lawrence had taken the lead with a run in the top of the eighth before the Scots scored twice in the bottom half of the inning to win it.
Liz Jonjak went 2-for-4 with a double and drove in four runs to pace the Vikings. Amanda Karnatz also went 2-for-4 with a double and drove in a run for Lawrence.
Emilia Jackson made the start, exited after 4.1 innings and returned to pitch the final inning for Lawrence (1-7). She struck out one and walked one in taking the loss. Sophie Migacz worked the final seven innings to pick up the win.
The game was tied 7-7 heading to the eighth when they went to the international tiebreaker rule, and Jonjak was placed on second. Karnatz delivered a one-out double to score Jonjak and give the Vikings an 8-7 lead.
The Scots ended up loading the bases with no outs in the bottom half of the inning, but Lawrence got a force at home for the first out. An infield single allowed the tying run to score, and the Scots squeezed home the winning run.
Lawrence took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first as Jonjak belted a two-run single to highlight the inning. After Macalester tied the score at 3-3, Lawrence struck for two runs in the third. A single and two-out walk got the rally going, and Jonjak delivered a two-run double to put the Vikings up 5-3.
Lawrence rallied again in the fourth as Rachel Urich walked and stole second. Sofie Pedersen followed with a run-scoring single for a 6-3 lead. Madeline MacLean then delivered a two-out single to score Pedersen and put the Vikings up 7-3.
Macalester (6-6) then scored twice in the fifth and two more times in the sixth to tie the game at 7-7.
