APPLETON, Wis. -- Five Lawrence University fencers have been named Division III All-Americans by the United States Fencing Coaches Association.
   Â
Vinzenz Mayer (Wiesbaden, Germany) and
Aaron Reese (Sacramento, Calif.) were the two men honored, and
Cameron Maas (Highlands Ranch, Colo.),
Maggie Wright (Marion, Iowa) and
Bettina Coker (Highland Park, Ill.) were the three women chosen.
   First-year Lawrence head coach
Eric Momberg was among the finalists for the USFCA Division III men's and women's Coach of the Year. Winners of the Coach of the Year awards will be announced the week of April 19th. Vince Paragano of Drew University is also a men's and women's finalist, and Peter Grandbois of Denison University is the other women's finalist.
"I am very proud of these five individuals and the work the whole team put in to get them to this point," Momberg said. "They have proven themselves to be among the top three Division III fencers in the country, a feat that took dedication, courage and teamwork. We are looking forward to returning next season and building off the strong foundation that has been laid this year."
This award caps an impressive career in epee for Mayer, a senior who was a 2019 All-Midwest Fencing Conference selection. Mayer posted bout victories against both Ohio State University and the University of Notre Dame this season. Reese, a first-year student competing in sabre, was among two Lawrence fencers chosen to compete at the 2021 NCAA Championships. He had a big day as he went 3-0 in a dual match vs. Notre Dame and also picked up a win against the Buckeyes.
Coker was the other Lawrence fencer, and the first woman, to earn a berth in the NCAA Championships. The sophomore was unbeaten in foil in two dual matches against Wayne State University and collected multiple bout victories against powerhouse squads from Notre Dame, Ohio State and Northwestern University during the season.
Maas and Wright both competed in epee for the Vikings and were impressive as well. Maas, a senior, was unbeaten in two duals matches against Wayne State and also earned multiple wins against Notre Dame, Ohio State and Northwestern. Wright, also a senior, was a key to Lawrence's wins over Wayne State and collected multiple bout victories against the powers from Notre Dame, Ohio State and Northwestern.
This is the first year the USFCA has chosen All-Americans from Division III institutions. Lawrence's previous All-American in fencing was Mike Gattnar, who won the national title in epee in 1995.
