MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The Lawrence University men's and women's track and field teams turned in a strong opening day Friday at the Midwest Conference Championships at Ash Park, delivering school records, podium finishes, and a packed slate of qualifiers heading into Saturday's finals.
The Viking men sit just one point off the lead after Day 1, holding second place with 42 points behind Illinois College's 43. The Lawrence women closed the opening day in sixth place with 26 points.Â
Lawrence's men were fueled by a massive performance in the 1500 meters as Nick Hansen shattered the school record with a runner-up finish in 3:53.36. Zach Meyer followed immediately behind in third place at 3:53.53 as the Vikings made a huge statement in one of the meet's premier distance events.Â
Jack McLaughlin added another historic moment for Lawrence in the hammer throw, launching a new school-record mark of 54.69 meters to finish second overall.Â
The Vikings also got a big effort from Finn Lee, who raced to a third-place finish in the men's 10,000 meters with a time of 32:54.13, while Caleb Hardy added a fifth-place performance in 33:41.63.Â
Connor Skarsten continued Lawrence's strong day in the throws with a fourth-place finish in the discus at 42.14 meters, and Werner Norrbom cleared 3.65 meters to place fifth in the pole vault.Â
Lawrence also continued to build momentum in the prelims as Brendan Cross punched his ticket to Saturday's finals in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.27.Â
On the women's side, Lillian Courtnage-Dyke led the way with a third-place finish in the 10,000 meters, crossing in 38:05.91 after battling near the front throughout the race.Â
The Vikings were especially strong in the pole vault as Clara Lyford earned a third-place finish at 2.50 meters, while Rachel Fleck and Paige Barry also reached the podium to give Lawrence one of its deepest event performances of the day.Â
Greta Vianden added another top finish for Lawrence in the javelin, taking sixth with a throw of 30.57 meters.Â
Lawrence also positioned itself well for championship Saturday on the track. Elena Hartung advanced to finals in three separate events after qualifying in the 100-meter hurdles, 400-meter hurdles, and 200 meters, continuing a standout all-around day for the freshman sprinter and hurdler. Gaby Skorczewski also secured a spot in the women's 400-meter final after running 1:00.51 in prelims.Â
Lyford added to her impressive opening day by also qualifying for Saturday's 400-meter hurdles final with a time of 1:12.36, giving the Vikings another finals appearance heading into the championship's final day
