MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 1 doubles team of
Margot Connor and
Emma Koppa took second Sunday at the Midwest Conference Championships at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
Connor and Koppa earned all-conference honors for the second consecutive season with their runner-up finish.Â
After winning their quarterfinal match over Cornell College on Saturday, Connor and Koppa took on top seed Lake Forest College in the semifinals. Connor and Koppa raced to a 5-0 lead over Margaret Bugnacki and Maria Jose Campos behind Connor's powerful ground strokes and Koppa's great play at the net. The Vikings then split the next four games to post an impressive 8-2 victory over the Foresters.
This marks the second consecutive year that Connor and Koppa have knocked off a Lake Forest duo in the semifinals.
The Lawrence team ran into a buzzsaw in the championship match as Grinnell College's Sabrina Tang and Ioanna Giannakou were on fire to start the match and posted an 8-1 victory.
Lawrence's No. 2 doubles team of
Lauren Aturaliya and
Chloe Lamb also won in the quarterfinals on Saturday but dropped an 8-3 decision to Lake Forest's Sara Lopez and Libby Moog in the semifinals.
The Vikings' No. 3 team of
Anna Vanden Acker and
Morgan Fisher posted an 8-1 win over Ripon College in Saturday's quarterfinals but lost 8-4 to Lake Forest's Rebecca Daskal and Maggie Fields in the semifinals.
Connor was the only player to see action in singles on Sunday as she finished with the consolation final at No. 1. Connor took command midway through the pro set and topped Illinois College's Michelle Maag 8-5.
In addition to Connor's win in the consolation final, Lawrence sent five players, Aturaliya at No. 2, Koppa at No. 3, Lamb at No. 4, Vanden Acker at No. 5 and Fisher at No. 6, all reached the championship semifinals.
