Macfarlane stars as Vikings split in season opener

Stella Macfarlane won two events and swam on a winning relay for the Vikings.
WAUKESHA, Wis. -- The Lawrence University swim teams split at the Carroll University Double Dual on Saturday at Van Male Natatorium.
The Lawrence men knocked off Carroll 94-77 and dropped a 133-61 decision to MSOE. On the women's side, Lawrence defeated MSOE 103-83 and fell to Carroll 125-75.
"The (men's team) had to win more or less every race if they wanted to win as a team," Lawrence coach Jody Riskowski said. "We didn't have a last relay so we knew no matter what, we were giving them 15 points. It was a tough challenge, and they rose to it."
Will Phillips picked up a pair of victories to pace the Lawrence men. Phillips won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.77 seconds, and he took the top spot in the 50 freestyle in 22.09 seconds.
Rookie Wiley Curtis put together a strong career debut as he grabbed first place in the 100 butterfly in 55.04 seconds. Curtis also took second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.78.
Michael Thorson took the top spot in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 11:01.20, and he took second in the 100 backstroke in 58.84 seconds. Keegan Mencke racked up a pair of second-place finishes as he took the runner-up spot in the 200 individual medley in 2:10.43 and in the 500 freestyle in 5:20.53.
The 200 medley relay team of Thorson, Curtis, Mencke and Phillips grabbed second place with a time of 1:42.89.
"Similarly on the women's side, we were outnumbered," Riskowski said. "The women had to fight for every point if we were going to come away with a win. Both teams should be extremely pleased with how they came together as a team."
On the women's side, Stella Macfarlane grabbed a pair of first-place finishes and swam on a winning relay. Macfarlane took the top spot in the 200 individual medley in 2:29.91, and she finished first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:16.67.
First-year Zoey Ziegler also had a successful collegiate debut as she picked up a win in the 100 backstroke in 1:06.34.
Macfarlane and Ziegler teamed with Abigail Herrick and Kiran Jayasinghe to win the 200 medley relay in 2:02.84.
