GRINNELL, Iowa -- The Lawrence University women's swimming and diving teams both posted strong results and broke two school records at the Pioneer Classic, which wrapped up Saturday at the Osgood Natatorium.
  The Lawrence women took second with 1,084 points, and the Lawrence men were third with 928.
  Will Phillips broke his own school record in the 100-yard freestyle, and Wiley Curtis topped the Lawrence mark in the 200 individual medley.Â
  "Both the men's and women's teams showed a lot of grit throughout the two days and four sessions," Lawrence coach
Jody Riskowski said. "They are a bit smaller than the other teams so to continue to step up, with most having five, six races a day, it was impressive."
  Phillips took fourth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.64 seconds, which broke the record of 47.24 he set in 2023. Curtis swam a time of 1:59.48 in the prelims of the 200 individual medley, and that broke the record of 2:00.32 set by Steve Vander Naalt back in 2004.   Â
  Phillips also grabbed third in the 200 freestyle in 1:46.38, and Sebastian Stacey was seventh in 1:50.29. Phillips also took seventh in the 50 freestyle in 21.69 seconds. Curtis also took eighth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:19.24.
  "Many walked away from the meet with season bests, if not lifetime bests, and of course there were the two new school records," Riskowski said.Â
  The women's 200 freestyle relay team of
Stella Macfarlane,
Zoey Ziegler,
Kiran Jayasinghe and
Irina Starostin grabbed second place in 1:45.61. The women's 800 freestyle relay team of Ziegler, Jayasinghe,
Lilly Lum and Starostin raced to second place in 8:45.91. Lawrence posted another second-place finish in the 400 medley relay with the team of Ziegler, Macfarlane, Starostin and Jayasinghe recording a time of 4:16.18. The 400 freestyle relay team of Macfarlane, Ziegler, Jayasinghe and Starostin was second in 3:49.40.
  "Even after all the racing, the teams continued to push themselves on the relays, putting up best times on the season," Riskowski said. "It was great to see the team rally around each other and cheering on each other."Â
   Starostin took third in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.05 and was fourth in the 50 freestyle in 24.94 seconds. She also raced to fifth in the 200 freestyle in 2:02.70 and grabbed seventh in the 100 freestyle in 55.70 seconds.   Â
  Lawrence had two swimmers in the top six in the 200 breaststroke with Macfarlane in fourth in 2:39.31 and Jayasinghe in sixth in 2:42.57. Macfarlane also took seventh in the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.40. Two Vikings placed in the 400 individual medley as Macfarlane took sixth in 5:08.90 and
Kylie White was seventh in 5:39.85.

Matilda Ramont grabbed sixth in the 200 backstroke in 2:24.91 and was seventh in the 1,650 freestyle in 20:25.80. Ziegler placed fifth in the 100 backstroke in 1:03.89.
  Diver Jackson Bertman took second in both 1-meter and 3-meter diving. Bertman was second on the 1-meter board with a score of 414.15 and second on the 3-meter board with a score of 389.60. On the women's side, diver
Olivia Martin was fifth on the 1-meter board with a score of 269.20.
  The men's 200 freestyle relay team of Phillips, Curtis, Sebastian Stacey and Keegan Mencke took third in 1:29.20. The men's 800 freestyle relay team of Curtis, Mencke, Stacey and Phillips grabbed third in 7:27.11. The 400 medley relay team of Michael Thorson, Curtis, Stacey and Phillips also took third in 3:42.16. The 400 freestyle relay team of Curtis, Mencke, Stacey and Phillips was third in 3:14.17. Lawrence's 200 medley relay team of Thorson, Curtis, Mencke and Spencer Phillips took fourth in 1:46.06.Â
    Thorson swam to fourth in the 200 backstroke in 2:00.61, took sixth in the 400 individual medley in 4:22.34 and was seventh in the 500 freestyle in 5:00.51. Mencke raced to fifth in the 200 butterfly in 2:10.25, and Spencer Phillips was seventh in the 1,650 freestyle in 19:12.82.
  "The meet was a great experience to learn that you can still be fast even when you're tired. After 10, 12 races, they were still putting up best times," Riskowski said.Â
