Phillips, Macfarlane claim wins at Whitewater

Irina Starostin grabbed a second-place finish and swam to third on the 200 medley relay at UW-Whitewater.
WHITEWATER, Wis. -- The Lawrence University swim teams picked up three victories on Saturday at the UW-Whitewater double dual.
Will Phillips won a pair of events for the men, and Stella Macfarlane grabbed a first place and also recorded a second-place finish.
"We knew coming into the meet, given the squad sizes of Lake Forest and Whitewater, as a team it was going to be an uphill day," Lawrence coach Jody Riskowski said. "However, individually there were a lot of strong performances."
Phillips won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.16 seconds. He also grabbed first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.82 seconds.
Michael Thorson posted the other top-three finish for the men as he took third in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:38.67.
"Throughout the season we've been working on have strong tactical swims with appropriate breathing patterns, and for most, we've made these elements habits, which is nice to see," Riskowski said.
Macfarlane swam to victory in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:11.62. She also took second in the 200 breaststroke, turning in a time of 2:40.36.
Irina Starostin also claimed a runner-up spot as she took second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.93 seconds. The women's 200 medley relay team of Macfarlane, Starostin, Zoey Ziegler and Kiran Jayasinghe grabbed third place in 1:56.17.
"The women's 200 medley relay dropped some significant time, and we'll have a few more weeks to sharpen the relay exchanges and finishes," Riskowski said. "While there's still some technical things were working on to improve on our starts, turns and underwaters, the pure swimming looks sharp."
Whitewater topped the Lawrence men 191-50, and Lake Forest College defeated the Vikings 194-51. On the women's side, Whitewater defeated Lawrence 207-74, and Lake Forest stopped the Vikings 196-58.
The Lawrence divers competed in the Point Invite at UW-Stevens Point on Friday and Saturday.
Jackson Bertman led the way with a sixth-place finish in the 1-meter competition with a score of 361.95. Bertman grabbed seventh place on the 3-meter board with a score of 317.25.
"Jackson is working on tougher dives so this was a great opportunity to compete against strong drivers from the region," Riskowski said. "Usually there are a handful of divers total so to have nearly 40 divers was a great way to practice managing energy, which will come in handy in the next few meets."
On the women's side, Olivia Martin was 19th on the 1-meter board with a score of 249.75 and took 22nd on the 3-meter board with a score of 219.70.
"Olivia competed her first full 11 dives on 3 meter, which is great preparation for conference," Riskowski said. "Her 1-meter event was a very strong, consistent dive performance, also helping build her confidence going into the last stages of the season."
