THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- The Lawrence University men's and women's swimming and diving teams both took third place Thursday at the Chris Knorr Invitational at Cal Lutheran University.
Lawrence senior Stella Macfarlane also won the Chris Knorr Leadership Award, which is given annually at this meet and honors its namesake, a Cal Lutheran swimmer whose life was taken by brain cancer while he was a student-athlete. Macfarlane is a double major in biochemistry and biology, a member of the Academic All-Midwest Conference team and a College Sports Communicators Academic All-District selection.
"It was really neat to provide names and backgrounds for our Lawrence nominees, and for Stella to win, it's outstanding," Lawrence coach Jody Riskowski said. "Great feather in her cap on her senior year season."
The Lawrence women finished third with 292 points, and Concordia California won with 833 points.
Irina Starostin led the way for the Vikings with a pair of top-four finishes. Starostin took second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:02.03. She also grabbed fourth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 56.21 seconds.
Diver Olivia Martin posted fifth-place finishes in both 1-meter and 3-meter diving. On the 1-meter board, Martin posted a score of 148.00 points, and she finished with 127.75 points on the 3-meter board.
"For many, it was the first time or first time in a long time swimming and diving outdoors, so they had to stay warm at the start and not overheat by the end," Riskowski said. "It was a good opportunity to practice managing warm-up and cool-down as well as preparing for races in different conditions."
On the men's side, Lawrence finished third with 265 points, and Concordia was first with 789.
Jackson Bertman grabbed one diving title and took second on the other board for the Vikings. Bertman won on the 3-meter board with a score of 254.00 points. He was second on the 1-meter board with a score of 240.95.
Will Phillips raced to fourth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.19 seconds, and Wiley Curtis was fourth in the 100 butterfly in 55.93 seconds. Sebastian Stacey was sixth in the 100 butterfly in 57.31, and he took fifth in the 50 freestyle in 22.85 seconds.
The 400 freestyle relay team of Phillips, Curtis, Spencer Phillips and Keegan Mencke was fourth in 3:28.47.
"It was fun for everyone to swim and dive against new competitors, and for some of our swimmers, swim new events," Riskowski said.
