KENOSHA, Wis. -- Lawrence University's Jackson Bertman swept the diving titles at the Wisconsin Private College Championships, which wrapped up Saturday at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center.
Bertman won the 1-meter competition with a score of 389.45 and took the top spot on the 3-meter board with a score of 378.40.
The Lawrence men finished third in the team standings with 118 points. Carthage College took the title with 356.Â
"The divers started off the meet strong, Jackson with the wins and Olivia (Martin) competing her second 11-dive 3-meter competition ever. It's been great to see their progression and development," Lawrence coach
Jody Riskowski said.
Will Phillips grabbed the title in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.15 seconds. He took third in the 50 freestyle in 21.79 seconds and was sixth in the 200 freestyle in 1:47.47.Â
The men's 200 freestyle relay team of Wiley Curtis, Keegan Mencke, Sebastian Stacey and Will Phillips were third in 1:29.29.Â
"On the swim side, it was a slog of a day, as it's more-or-less a full three-day conference meet lineup in six hours and swimming five or six events," Riskowski said. "The plus of this meet format is it will make swimming one or two events in three hours seem like a breeze."Â
Curtis grabbed second in the 100 butterfly in 54.16 seconds, placed fourth in the 200 individual medley in 2:00.41 and was fifth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:19.77. Spencer Phillips took the runner-up spot in the 1,650 freestyle in 19:22.89.
Michael Thorson raced to fourth in the 400 individual medley in 4:26.81, took fourth in the 200 backstroke in 2:03.03 and placed sixth in the 500 freestyle in 4:59.85. Mencke took sixth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.40.
On the women's side, Lawrence was fourth with 76 points, and Carthage was first with 290.5.
 Â
Irina Starostin raced to the title in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.26 seconds.
The women's 400 freestyle relay team of
Zoey Ziegler,
Kiran Jayasinghe,
Stella Macfarlane and Starostin raced to second place in 3:50.31. The 200 freestyle team of Macfarlane, Ziegler, Jayasinghe and Starostin took third in 1:44.12. The 400 medley relay team of Ziegler, Macfarlane, Starostin and Jayasinghe took third in 4:15.95.
"A highlight throughout the day was the strong relays," Riskowski said. "Even at the end of the meet, there were great swims and races on the relays."
Ziegler placed fifth in the 200 freestyle in 2:05.22, and Jayasinghe was fifth in the 200 butterfly in 2:30.27. Macfarlane placed fifth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:39.79 and was sixth in the 200 individual medley in 2:20.25.
"It's down the last 18 days for those keeping track so the next few weeks will be focusing on the technical elements -- starts, walls, underwaters, breakouts and finishes, which is also all the fun stuff," Riskowski said.
