Vikings roll Cougars

APPLETON, Wis. – The Lawrence University men's tennis team delivered a dominant singles performance to secure a 6-1 victory over Concordia University Chicago, improving its overall record to 6-1 on the season.

After dropping the doubles point, the Vikings responded emphatically in singles play, sweeping all six courts to put the match away.

In doubles action, the No. 1 pairing of Gabriel Garcia and Benjamin Hoppe battled to a 6-0Ā victory, but Concordia claimed wins at No. 2 (6-3) and No. 3 (6-3) to take the early 1-0 lead.

Lawrence wasted little time flipping the momentum once singles began.

At No. 1 singles, Hoppe set the tone with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) win, grinding out a tight second-set tiebreak to even the team score. Gabriel Garcia followed with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2, while Owen Horton was equally sharp at No. 3, earning a 6-0, 6-1 triumph.

Will Phillips delivered a clutch performance at No. 4 singles, taking the opening set in a tiebreak 7-6 (7-5) before closing out the match 6-3 in the second. Jonathan Myszka provided one of the day's most dramatic finishes at No. 5, bouncing back after dropping the first set 6-7 (3-7) to win the second 7-5 and secure the match in a 10-3Ā match tiebreak.

Xander Priest capped the sweep with a strong 7-5, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles to seal the 6-1 team win.
