Vikings capture six consolation titles at MWC Championships

Anna Vanden Acker took the No. 1 singles consolation title at the MWC Championships.
    MADISON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University women's tennis team captured consolation titles in five singles flights and one doubles flight on Sunday at the Midwest Conference Championships at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
    Anna Vanden Acker at No. 1 singles, Clara Hills at No. 2, Logan Kane at No. 3, Tess McGlenn at No. 4 and Fanta Jatta at No. 5 all won the consolation bracket. The No. 2 doubles team of Hills and McGlenn also took the consolation title.
    In the consolation final, Vanden Acker rallied from a 3-1 deficit against Illinois College's Alyssa Wise. Vanden Acker then won six consecutive games to grab a 7-3 lead and went on to an 8-5 victory. In her opening match of the championships on Saturday, Vanden Acker battled with Cornell College's Tansy Graves in the quarterfinals. Vanden Acker won the opening set 6-4 before Graves rallied to win 6-3, 6-2.
    Hills cruised to an 8-0 win over Ripon College's Josie Rondestvedt in the consolation final. Hills dropped a 7-5, 6-3 decision to Monmouth College's Natalie Labicki in the championship quarterfinals on Saturday. 
    Kane pulled out an 8-7 victory over Ripon's Hadley Berendsen in the consolation final. Kane won the tiebreaker 7-3. Kane challenged Cornell's Audrey Small in the championship quarterfinals on Saturday. Kane took the opening set 7-6, winning 7-5 in the tiebreaker, before Small rallied to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-1. 
    McGlenn started Sunday with an 8-3 win over Ripon's Chase Polyak in the consolation semifinals. McGlenn followed that with an 8-4 win over Monmouth's Jennifer Shimmin in the consolation final. Cornell's Alyssa Flynn topped McGlenn 7-5, 6-2 in the championship quarterfinals on Saturday.
    Jatta took down Ripon's Allison Pavlovec 8-5 in the consolation semifinals and then defeated Cornell's Isabella Wallin 8-6 in the consolation final. Jatta fell 6-4, 6-1 to Illinois College's Madison Eastin in the championship quarterfinals.
    At No. 6 singles, Madi Mishica fell to Cornell's Jenna Benkufsky 6-3, 6-0 in the championship quarterfinals. Mishica then defeated Monmouth's Alayna McKinley 8-4 in the consolation semifinals. Ripon's Isabella Engstrom topped Mishica 8-4 in the consolation final.
    Hills and McGlenn rolled to an 8-1 victory over Monmouth's Kimber Calvert and Natalie Holst in the consolation final. Hills and McGlenn dropped an 8-4 decision to Cornell's Flynn and Benkufsky in the championship quarterfinals.
    At No. 1 doubles, Vanden Acker and Kane put an early scare into Grinnell College's Erin Jarvis and Lily Perrin before the Pioneers rallied for an 8-3 win in the championship quarterfinals. Vanden Acker and Kane then trailed 6-3 to Ripon's Rondestvedt and Tia Endrizzi before winning the next four games to grab a 7-6 lead. The Ripon duo won the next game and then took the tiebreaker 7-3 to win 8-7.
    At No. 3 doubles, Jatta and Mishica fell to Lake Forset College's Anika Kinnear and Emily Bross 8-3 in the championship quarterfinals. The Lawrence duo then dropped an 8-1 decision to Monmouth's Shimmin and McKinley in the consolation semifinals.
