APPLETON, Wis.Ā ā The Lawrence University women's tennis team turned in a strong all-around performance at the Fox Cities Racquet Club, defeating Martin Luther College 6-1.
The Vikings gained early control by securing the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles, Clara Hills and Sky Shinohara teamed up for a 6-4 victory over Britney Pratl and Emily Gronholz. Logan Kane and Madelena Priest followed with a key 7-5 win at No. 2 doubles against Reba Schroeder and Brianna Bigelow to clinch the doubles advantage. Martin Luther picked up its lone doubles victory at No. 3, where Mathilde Bodenbender-Benne and Allie Hinz topped Rachael Pofahl and Maddie Bublik 6-2.
Lawrence carried that momentum into singles play, winning five of six matches.
Hills was sharp at the top of the lineup, earning a decisive 6-1, 6-0 win over Pratl at No. 1 singles. Sky Shinohara added another point at No. 3 with a steady 6-4, 6-1 victory over Schroeder. At No. 4, Rachael Pofahl posted a 6-3, 6-2 win against Greta Kopp.
The tightest battle of the afternoon came at No. 5 singles, where Maddie Bublik was pushed to the limit in a back-and-forth contest. After dropping a competitive opening set, Bublik responded with a commanding second-set performance to even the match before edging Mathilde Bodenbender-Benne 4-6, 6-1, 11-9 in a dramatic match tiebreak to secure the point for Lawrence.
Lawrence was tested again at No. 6 singles, where Madelena Priest split the first two sets before closing out Callie Bivers 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 in another tightly contested match tiebreak.
Martin Luther's only point came at No. 2 singles, where Emily Gronholz defeated Logan Kane 6-2, 6-2 while Lawrence claimed five singles matches and two doubles flights to secure the 6-1 team win.
