Vikings send three to NCAA Championships

    GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Three Lawrence University men's fencers are headed to the NCAA Championships after their performances Saturday at the NCAA Midwest Regional at Mitchell Fieldhouse.
    Cristobal Perez Fourcade, Eli Freyre de Andrade and Thomas Craley all qualified for the national championships, which are set for March 20-23 at Penn State.
    Perez Fourcade and Freyre de Andrade both qualified in saber, and Craley advanced to the national championships in foil.
    Perez Fourcade earned his first trip to the NCAA Championships after finishing fourth among the 14 competitors in saber. The fourth-place finish is the highest for a Lawrence fencer since Jakub Nowak took seventh in epee in 2020.
    Perez Fourcade put together a 10-3 record on the day with his only losses coming to three fencers from Notre Dame. Among his 10 wins, he knocked off third-place finisher Nolan Williams of Ohio State.
    Freyre de Andrade also is making his first trip to the national tournament after finishing ninth. Freyre de Andrade, who finished eighth at the 2024 Midwest Regional, put together a 4-9 record. Freyre de Andrade recorded wins over Lawrence teammate Donovin Brown, Kelly Liu of Ohio State, Wayne State's Zeyad Nofal and Detroit Mercy's Nathan Mysiorek.
    Craley, a senior making his first trip to the NCAA Championships, finished 2-3 in the opening round of pool competition and advanced. He then went 1-10 in the final round of pool bouts to finish 11th overall. 
    Jack Kropp grabbed 10th place in men's epee and posted an overall record of 8-13 on the day. Kropp went 2-3 in his opening round to advance. He advanced again by going 2-3 in the second round of pool bouts. In the final pool bouts of the day, Kropp posted a 4-7 record.      
    Dominick Vaccaro went 1-9 to finish 17th in epee. Archer Prochazka was 1-4 and finished 20th, and Damien Feliciano was 0-5 and finished 22nd.
    Jordan Diacos and Brown completed the rest of the men's saber contingent. Diacos went 3-10 and finished 11th, and Brown was 3-10 and finished 12th.
    Mateo Wilkins went 1-4 in men's foil to take 14th, and Vinicius Alonso de Paula and Oliver Reece both went 0-5. Alonso de Paula finished 16th and Reece was 18th.
    On the women's side, Jayna Davis led the way with a 13th-place finish in saber. She finished with a 3-3 record on the day. Miami Kirkwood went 2-4 to finish 14th in saber, and Sam Seelig finished 21st. 
    Nora Anderson went 2-4 in women's epee to finish 14th, and Sophia Lewis placed 20th.
